If your are involved with small boats at whatever level, becoming more proficient means becoming safer – that means being more relaxed and having more fun!
The RYA’s National Powerboat Scheme is for those who use small powerboats for leisure or work, whether for their own sake or in connection with another activity such as sailing or rescue.
The course takes place over two days and is a combination of practical and shorebased skills. By taking your course at our RYA Recognised Training Centre you can expect to be taught by an experienced, qualified instructor on our school boat with a maximum of three students. You can enter the scheme at any level even children aged as young as 12 can take the Level 2 course. This two-day course provides the skills and background knowledge needed to drive a boat under power and is the basis of the International Certificate of Competence. It includes Close quarters handling, high speed manoeuvres, man overboard recovery and collision regulations. The course can be taken inland or on the coast and your certificate will be endorsed accordingly.
RPM Sea School is a professional RYA Training Centre, recognised to provide training and assessment under the National Powerboat Scheme for levels 1 and 2, First Aid, VHF (DSC) and International Certificate of Competence. Our Training facilities are classroom based at the Boating Centre and on water at Lyme Regis.
RYA Training Level 2
The RYA level 2 course will provide the skills and background knowledge, needed by the competent power boat driver and is the basis for the international certificate of competence. The aim is to teach boat handling and seamanship in a variety of conditions.
Practical: Launching and recovery Preparation of boat Boat handling, at low and high speed Securing to a buoy anchoring Leaving and coming alongside Man over board Disabled craft Towing and being towed
Shore Based: Types of craft Engines and Drives Ancillary and safety equipment Rules of the road Routine maintenance Weather forecasts Communication with other craft
Coastal: Apply the above on coastal water Charts and coastal systems Tidal systems
Course Fees
Per Person One student £465.00 Two students sharing the cost £295.00 each Three students sharing the cost £225.00 each
